Frequently asked questions
What is the EMDN code used for?
The European Medical Device Nomenclature (EMDN) is the nomenclature manufacturers must assign when registering the Basic UDI-DI in EUDAMED under the MDR/IVDR. Notified bodies use it, among other things, to sample technical documentation, and competent authorities use it for market surveillance.
Does the tool pick the code automatically from my product name?
No. You select the code yourself, level by level. The product name and intended purpose are only used for our records and the optional expert review. Always choose the most specific terminal code; use “other” codes (ending in 99) only if no more specific code fits.
Which EMDN version does the tool use?
The tool is based on EMDN v2026 as published by the European Commission (8,516 codes). We update the tool when the Commission publishes a new version.
